Many companies are struggling with the constantly rising cost factor of electricity. However, many of them also give away a lot of savings potential because they do not fully exploit the possibilities of intelligent self-consumption optimization with peak shaving (peak load capping with battery storage).

Optimize your power consumption with Peak Shaving

If your company operates in the manufacturing sector, your electricity consumption probably peaks when you run your machines at full speed. Unfortunately, this often leads to disproportionately high electricity costs, as your network operator charges you for such load peaks through very high network usage fees. Thus, it is not your average consumption but the called peak load that becomes the decisive cost factor, however brief it may be. So what can you do about it?

You can throttle the respective machine and thus reduce the power demand This is of course not an ideal solution in many cases, because it would lead to production losses, which is rarely better than a higher electricity bill. The alternative to this is, at moments when your power demand spikes and a load peak occurs, to plug in an alternative power source, such as an in-house battery storage system, that will compensate for this short-term fluctuation. This second option is called load capping or "peak shaving" and is one of the functions of 'smart load management'.

Capping peak loads has advantages for you as a consumer as well as for your energy supplier and the grid operator: While you benefit from the significant savings potential, less load fluctuations have to be taken into account on the utility side. In the late morning, power consumption rises sharply. With the help of intelligent peak load capping, it is now possible to cap the power drawn from the grid at a certain level by providing the additional power during this period from an in-house battery storage system (peak load capping with battery storage). This setup allows you to maximize efficiency when purchasing grid power because peak loads are completely buffered by the battery and no longer drive up your grid usage charges. The battery storage is then recharged during a phase of low power demand.

With this setup, you can cap peak loads with battery storage and save a lot of grid fees. Whether it's worth it for your company's bottom line depends heavily on your facility's consumption profile. To access it, you'll need to know the consumption rate and your annual consumption - information you typically get from your electric utility. Alternatively, you can collect the data by installing an IOT/IOE gateaway (BEAAM). This Internet-of-Energy gateway connects all your energy consumers and allows you to monitor and evaluate consumption values in the relevant period.

Once the battery storage with intelligent peak load capping is installed, you don't have to worry about anything else. The automatic system detects when consumption threatens to exceed the threshold you have defined and automatically switches on the battery storage.
