Combined heat and power plant CHP
Heat and power - a clever system
Our CHP units , with electrical outputs from 7.5 to 140 kW, are true miracles of energy generation. Based on combined heat and power (CHP), they generate both heat and electricity for industrial plants, businesses, and private households. The latest series are particularly durable, quiet, and efficient.
Pioneer of the energy transition: Investing in CHP is a strong competitive advantage
A CHP unit is an excellent source of energy. Whether for industrial use, production, hospitals, hotels or trade - see the benefits for yourself:
- High overall efficiency: Combined heat and power generation means that the energy used is utilized more efficiently than with the separate generation of electricity and heat.
- Reduced emissions: Thanks to their high efficiency and the effective use of waste heat, CHP units significantly reduce CO₂ emissions.
- Decentralized energy supply: CHP units enable a local and decentralized energy supply that minimizes grid losses and increases security of supply. Critical infrastructure in particular can be maintained with such an efficient energy solution.
A CHP unit offers you both economic and ecological benefits, making it an attractive option for the future of energy supply. By using a CHP unit, industrial plants have the opportunity to generate their own electricity. Networked with their own electricity storage system, decentralized energy systems can also maximize their own electricity consumption.

smartblock CHP series
The smartblock® combined heat and power plant series forms smartblock 7.5 to smartblock 100s offers a needs-based product range in the power segment up to 140 kW electrical. This enables an optimally coordinated and cost-effective solution for various project sizes and applications.
The wide range of applications thus offers possibilities ranging from apartment buildings to wellness hotels or municipal facilities such as indoor swimming pools or commercial and industrial buildings. The devices can also be operated in stand-alone mode to ensure emergency power supply in the event of a power failure.
Reliable and quiet
Even though combined heat and power (CHP) is a well-known technology, the quality and reliability of a CHP unit depend on many design details.
A variety of patent-pending solutions, as well as continuous further development, ensure that our smartblocks offer outstanding performance characteristics in terms of efficiency, noise, reliability and ease of maintenance.
Fit for the future
The smartblocks can be operated with different fuels. In addition to the familiar natural and liquid gases, they also include renewable biogases and sewage gases. Up to 40% hydrogen can be added to the fuel gas with virtually unchanged performance. Our CHP units are therefore ideally equipped for the expected increase in the importance of hydrogen.

Best emission values
The heartbeat of the smartblock engines is determined by the newly developed GSC technology* (GSC = Gas Stream Combustion). This innovative combustion process achieves complete flame penetration of the combustion chamber, which has been optimized to minimize surface area. The uniformity of combustion and thermodynamic efficiency reach peak values.
The result is a smartblock engine.
Stable, robust, low-emission, highly efficient and easy to service.
CHP for industrial, commercial or private users: 3 models compared
A comparison of three CHP unit types: From the smallest to the largest CHP unit in the smartblock series, they are examples of the different areas of application that we can serve with models individually tailored to your requirements.
The smartblock 7.5 has an electrical output of 7.5 kW and a thermal output of around 20 kW. With its compact dimensions of 1.04 x 0.70 x 0.82 meters and a weight of around 350 kilograms, it is ideal for single-family homes, smaller businesses and catering establishments. This model is particularly suitable for use in smaller buildings as it is both compact and quiet. Whether hot water or heating, with the smartblock 7.5 homeowners or small businesses can take their energy production into their own hands.
The smartblock 22 offers an electrical output of 22 kW and a thermal output of around 51 kW. It has larger dimensions of 1.41 x 0.82 x 0.98 meters and weighs around 895 kilograms. This type is designed for larger buildings such as apartment buildings, larger companies or public facilities. With its higher electrical and thermal output, it is suitable for medium to large energy requirements. In a house with several parties, the CHP module is all the more worthwhile, as the use of heating or electricity can be kept more constant due to several parties.

How CHP units work
Combined heat and power plants (CHP) are decentralized energy systems that generate electricity and heat at the same time. This is achieved using the principle of combined heat and power (CHP), in which a primary energy source, usually natural gas, is burned in an engine or turbine. The mode of operation can be divided into four main steps:
- Combustion: The primary energy source is burned in an internal combustion engine, a gas turbine or a fuel cell. It is partially converted into mechanical energy. Wood, natural gas, biogas or sewage gas can be used for this purpose.
- Power generation: The mechanical energy drives a generator that produces electricity.
- Heat generation: The waste heat generated during combustion is not released unused into the environment as in conventional power plants, but is captured in a heat exchanger.
- Heat utilization: The collected heat is used for heating purposes, hot water preparation or industrial processes.

The efficiency of a CHP unit is very high because, thanks to CHP, the waste heat that is lost unused in conventional power plants is used efficiently here. The electrical efficiency, i.e. the proportion of the energy used that is converted into electricity, is around 25-40%. The thermal efficiency, i.e. the proportion of energy that is converted into usable heat, can be between 40-70%. Together, this results in an overall efficiency of 85-95% for standard CHP plants, which is significantly higher than when electricity and heat are generated separately. Our latest system, the smartblock 100s, even achieves overall efficiencies of over 95% by utilizing condensation heat.
Thanks to this high overall efficiency, CHP units help to reduce primary energy consumption and CO₂ emissions. Thanks to their efficient operation, CHP units generate electricity and heat that can be used continuously, as is the case in residential areas, hospitals or industrial plants.
