Public grids are becoming increasingly susceptible to short or long-term grid failures. Grid backup operation ensures that operation is maintained, minimizing the risk of damage to the system and the environment. The smartblock® CHP unit has an emergency power function which, in combination with a customized design of the connection box, supplies the most important consumers with emergency power. When the grid returns, the emergency power CHP unit automatically synchronizes back to the grid without interruption.

Combined heat and power units for grid-parallel operation with emergency power function are equipped with electronically controlled synchronous generators. This ensures high voltage and frequency stability even in emergency power operation (island operation). These plants are used wherever electricity and heat are required and where a power supply cannot be dispensed with even in the event of a grid failure.


CHP in parallel grid operation

Combined heat and power plants in the grid-parallel operation version can be operated exclusively in parallel with the public power grid due to the use of water-cooled asynchronous generators. A grid replacement operation in case of grid failure is therefore not possible.

These combined heat and power plants are primarily used to heat buildings, whereby the electricity generated from natural gas, biogas or sewage gas is consumed by the company itself (self-generation of electricity) and the surplus electricity is fed into the public grid.

Alternatively, the generated electricity can also be fed completely into the public power grid.

CHP in stand-alone operation as an emergency power system

Combined heat and power units in island mode are used in properties where there is no connection to the public power grid. Whether for safety reasons or due to the geographical location, a CHP unit with emergency power function is an efficient and low-emission solution for the uninterrupted generation of heat and electrical energy. The system starts up within a very short time and the motors and gensets are operating at maximum output after just 15 seconds. Depending on the model, you can generate between 7.5 and up to 90 kW of electricity - with maximum efficiency.

Ensuring security of supply with an emergency CHP unit

Whether in a hospital or in a livestock barn, an emergency CHP unit can not only generate heat without interruption as long as it is used in stand-alone operation, but can also maintain the power supply to consumers in the stand-alone grid. This is in the event of a blackout or a power shortage (winter power shortage). For consumers in parallel grid operation, generating their own electricity from gas can be the cheapest and most effective method of supplying energy. In turn, feeding into the public grid supports the grid and thus stabilizes the grid frequency.
